Once in Darmstadt

There are some things that you absolutely must do after you arrive in Darmstadt. 

Step 1: Find accommodation

As mentioned before, when you plan to study in Darmstadt, you have to start looking for an accommodation as soon as possible. It is very recommended to have a lease agreement before you arrive in Darmstadt. If this is not the case, please look for the relevant information at the following link.  

Step 2: Registration at the registry office for residents

Within one week after arrival, you have to register at the registry office for residents. Everyone living in Darmstadt has to enroll at the registration office of Darmstadt. Upon registration, you will receive your residence attestation that you later need for opening a bank account. 

Step 3: Open a bank account

In Germany, most of financial matters are executed by money transfer or electronic cash. Therefore, a bank account is helpful and important. Opening a bank account is free of charge for student. You need to bring with you the following documents.

Step 4: Health insurance

To get health insurance coverage, you can, for example, join the AOK (Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse) or the TK (Techniker Krankenkasse)

Step 5: Enrollment at the university

You need to register before starting your studies and re-register each semester. The registration process must be carried out in person at the Akademische Auslandsamt (AAA). The following documents are required for the enrollment:

1. Your travel passport.

2. Your original certificates and grades (i.e. school certificate, bachelor certificate, master certificate, university transcripts etc.).

3. Proof of health insurance coverage.

4. Your original English language certificate (TOEFL, IELTS, etc.).

5. Specific country documents (i.e. APS).

Note that a list of all documents necessary is enclosed with the admission letter.

Upon registration you will get your matriculation number and a payment slip to transfer the payment for semester contribution to the university. Please do not make any money transfers prior to receiving this information. You will also get a personal account for mail and internet. You must use this mail address to register for courses in the TUCaN system and you will receive important notifications only via this address. 

Your student identity card is also valid for the bus, tram, and train. You can use public transportation within the RMV-area free of charge. 

Step 6: Registration at the foreigner's registration office

Please arrange an appointment with the foreigner's registration office within your town or living area before your visa expires. Your entrance visa has to be changed in a visa for student affairs. The eAT-card costs 110 €, which have to be paid by the international guest. 

Please bring with you the following documents on the day of your appointment:

1. Valid passport.

2. Two biometrical passport photos. 

3. Student ID and certificate of matriculation.

4. Lease agreement.

5. Proof of health insurance coverage.

6. Proof of sufficient means of subsistence.
