Mentoring Program

Mentoring program is a program started to support the new international joining students. It is aimed at helping new semester students by assigning a mentor to them. The mentors are international students of Distributed Software Systems master program, in higher semesters. The mentors will help you with your problems/issues and also regarding administrative formalities or study related questions you might face before/after coming to Germany, during the enrollment process at the university and afterwards. This is a program where students help students.

The registration for the Mentoring Program is open for the summer term since February, and for the winter term since August. After receiving your admission from the university, please register at our online form, to get support from one of our mentors. Please note that studying at TU Darmstadt may be very different from the type of studies you are familiar with in your home university. For this reason the mentors should help and guide you towards successful studies at TU Darmstadt. Also, after the first semester, a talk that reflects your first semester will be given. The slides are already available here and may guide you towards what to be expected from studying at TU Darmstadt.

The new international joining students will receive support from our mentors in two main phases during their first semester of studies in the Distributed Software Systems master program:

1. Before the lecture period.

  • After the new international joining students get the admission from the university, an email correspondence should be set between the mentors and the new students. During this time the support is mostly focused on issues regarding visa application, finding an accommodation, documents preparation, the transportation system in Germany etc.
  • Picking up the new students at the airport is optional, not mandatory from the mentors side. But, however, they should give good instruction how to reach the university/accommodation.
  • Assistance with the administrative formalities in the first week of arrival for the new students. The mentors are expected to organize small groups of mentees that arrive during the same week, 2 or 3 students, and accompany them during the registration period.
  • Preparation for the semester start. General information regarding the program structure, time management, consultation regarding the courses offered each semester, the CP system in TU Darmstadt and grades, etc.

2. During the lecture period.

  • Now the mentors will offer more course-related support. This is intended to help the students performance during their first semester of studies. The students are required to choose a mentor that shares the same interest for the course of studies. In this way, it is expected that both mentors and mentees choose almost the same courses during the semester, which eases their collaboration during the semester. Every mentor can manage his/her own group of around 20 students, into smaller study groups of 4-5 students each. Every week, the mentor is expected to spend 1 hour with each of his/her study groups of students for discussing lecture, solving exercises etc.
