New at the Department: Professor Dr. Carsten Binnig

The Department of Computer Science welcomes Professor Dr. Carsten Binnig to the TU Darmstadt.

Prof. Dr. Carsten Binnig

Since the beginning of August, Prof. Binnig is a new member of the Computer Science Department where he leads the Data Management Lab. Carsten Binnig obtained his PhD from the University of Heidelberg. Afterwards, he worked as a postdoc at ETH Zurich and thereafter, Prof. Binnig spent several years in the industry as a software architect at SAP where he was co-responsible for the development of the in-memory database SAP HANA before he went to the renowned Brown University in the USA in 2014. The focus of the Computer Science Department at TU Darmstadt on data-centric applications as well as the close collaborations between various institutes strengthened Prof. Binnig's decision to join the TU, where he is now a full professor for the core area Data Management.

"How do you enable users to analyse large amounts of data intuitively and interactively?" and "How do you build scalable data management systems in order to execute them on a large compute cluster while still enabling the interactivity of the application?" These are only two of the core questions which Professor Binnig researches on. This video gives a first insight into his research.

Regarding the Rhine-Main area, Prof. Binnig especially likes the activity and creativity of the metropolitan area and connects with this the diverse opportunities and collaborations with industry and academia in the region. In addition, he welcomes the close collaborations at the TU Darmstadt and especially those within the Computer Science department. In future, Prof. Binnig plans to start further collaborations with his new colleagues in the broader area of data management, such as Usable Machine Learning and Scalable Data Management, for instance.

We wish Professor Binnig great success and a good start at our Department!
