How to get your Master Thesis Topic?

  1. Identify some broad topics of interest that are related to your studies; in particular to the courses that you have successfully completed.
  2. Take a look at the webpages/black boards of the respective groups for open master theses that are related to your topics of interest.
  3. Contact the assistant (or professor) that is mentioned on the respective offering. Even if no master theses are currently publicly offered by a group there may still be some topics available. Please get in contact with a group member or the professor of the respective group and ask.
  4. Note, that it is also possible to write a master thesis that is offered by a professor who is not directly involved in the MDSS program. It is, however, crucial that the thesis applies knowledge that was gained as part of the MDSS program in some way. In this case - and only in this case - ask the planned supervisor to contact the coordinator to get the thesis topic approved.
  5. As soon as you start working on your master thesis register your thesis.
  6. Note that you have a one-time chance to abort the master thesis in the first eight weeks. In this case it will not be considered as an aborted attempt. Please see §23 (6) of the undefinedGeneral Examination Terms of the Technische Universität Darmstadt for details.
  7. The official regulations regarding master theses are specified in §23 of the undefinedGeneral Examination Terms of the Technische Universität Darmstadt.

If you cannot find a Master Thesis Topic

If you do not find a suitable thesis within a couple of weeks, please directly contact the dean of study in his role as the head of the examination committee. In your email directly mention three professors who are involved in the MDSS program (that is who give lectures that are part of the MDSS course catalog) as potential advisers. Optionally, list all the lectures that you have taken during your studies. The dean of study will then assign a thesis adviser, following the procedure specified in §23 (3) of the undefinedGeneral Examination Terms of the Technische Universität Darmstadt.
