Open Position: Research Assistant / PHD Student Distributed and Networked Systems

2025/12/15

Interested in conducting cutting-edge research on topics related to the increasing mismatch between data sizes and CPU power in data centres and clouds? We have a new opening for a PhD position in Distributed Computing with Programmable Hardware Accelerators!

Apply

Application deadline is 12th of January 2026!

As a PhD student in the Systems Group, your role will be to help us overcome computational challenges by going beyond today's software and hardware architectures – namely by using FPGAs deployed alongside CPUs, in storage nodes or in the network. Our group offers the opportunity to work on exciting research topics in a vibrant international environment and in collaboration with other leading universities as well as FPGA and database companies.

You will work on research tasks in the general areas of distributed systems, heterogeneous hardware and data management systems. It will be investigated how the processing of event-driven data streams can be made more efficient by specialised hardware and how different programming paradigms can be combined with distributed and heterogeneous hardware.
