One Year DFKI Site Darmstadt
2026/02/06
The DFKI site in Darmstadt has developed into a permanent and important part of Germany’s AI research landscape since its founding in 2022. Its work focuses on Systemic AI, meaning the intelligent integration of different AI methods into powerful overall systems. To mark its first anniversary, the site presented its research achievements and highlighted the close collaboration between science, industry, and public institutions.
Research at the site is organized into three main areas.
First, scientists are developing learning robots that can act autonomously using reinforcement learning and simulations, enabling them to operate in dynamic real-world environments.
Second, the focus is on safe and trustworthy AI systems, aiming to reduce risks and make AI more transparent and reliable. One example is an AI-based crisis management system that analyzes complex situations and explores possible developments to support decision-making.
Third, researchers are working on AI-driven decision support based on data. Their goal is to automate the design of data processing and analysis pipelines, making data-driven decisions faster and more accessible for companies and institutions.
Through this work, the Darmstadt site makes a significant contribution to the development of secure, practical, and high-performance AI, while strengthening the regional AI ecosystem in Hesse and supporting innovation in Germany and Europe.
