The UKP Lab was founded in 2009 by Prof. Dr. Iryna Gurevych and is part of the Computer Science Department at the Technical University of Darmstadt.
Our Mission
The UKP Lab carries out cutting-edge research in Natural Language Processing (NLP) with a strong emphasis on Large Language Models, conversational AI, question answering, cross-document NLP as well as novel datasets and problem definitions.

- Iryna Gurevych has received the first ATHENE Distinguished Professorship for her impactful and continuous contributions to the research on AI Safety
- Iryna Gurevych is a member of the Academia Europaea
- Iryna Gurevych is the winner of the Royal Society Milner Award and Lecture 2025
- Iryna Gurevych recently won a highly prestigious ERC Advanced Grant from the European Research Council for her project InterText – NLP for living texts, in context.
- Iryna Gurevych is a full member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW).
- Iryna Gurevych is the first recipient of the “Spitzen Professur” by LOEWE in Hesse, Germany. This novel program aims to keep researchers with a high international reputation at Hessian universities.
- Iryna Gurevych is the Past-President of Association for Computational Linguistics.
Former UKP Members – Now Faculty
