The non-profit organisation, whose acronym VLDB stands for “Very Large Data Bases”, aims to promote scientific work and international exchange in the field of databases and related areas. The Foundation serves as the steering committee for the VLDB conference series, one of the most important and international conferences in the field. The VLDB conference was founded in 1975 and is now closely associated with SIGMOD and SIGKDD.

Prof. Dr. Carsten Binnig
Professor Binnig has been a full-time professor in the Department of Computer Science since 2017. He is currently the head of the Department of . He earned his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zurich. Prior to joining Brown University in 2014, he spent several years in industry as a software architect at SAP, where he played a key role in the development of the SAP HANA main memory database. Binnig is a Principal Investigator at the Hessian Center for Artificial Intelligence ( Data and AI Systems) and heads the research area hessian.AI at the Darmstadt site of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI).
