The conference, which combines the German Conference on Pattern Recognition (GCPR) and Vision, Modelling and Visualisation (VMV), is an important forum for the international research community in the field of pattern recognition and visual modelling.

The €5,000 prize is awarded annually by the German Association for Pattern Recognition (DAGM) and honours outstanding contributions by young researchers in the fields of pattern recognition, machine vision and machine learning. Thies, who has been Professor of 3D Graphics & Vision at TU Darmstadt since 2023, researches intensively in the fields of computer graphics, image processing and deep learning. His work on facial reconstruction, animation and video processing is particularly noteworthy. A few days ago, the European Research Council (ERC) awarded him a Starting Grant worth 1.5 million euros.

Especially noteworthy: Professor Anna Rohrbach , another TU Darmstadt scientist, also received the prestigious Pattern Recognition Award last year. Thies' award is the latest in a series of outstanding honours that underline the importance of TU Darmstadt in the international research community.
