Members of the state parliament Schmitz and Franz visit TU Darmstadt

ENCRYPTO lab presents research

2024/09/25

On Monday (16 September), members of the Hessian state parliament Lucas Schmitz (spokesman for science and the arts) and Peter Franz (member of parliament for the Darmstadt II constituency; both CDU) were guests at TU Darmstadt.

They were welcomed to the Wissenschaftsschloss by TU President Tanja Brühl and TU Chancellor Martin Lommel. The visit focused on the diverse contributions that TU Darmstadt makes in research, teaching and xchange to shaping the great challenges of the future. The visitors and members of the Executive Board also discussed how TU Darmstadt's formative role as an innovation driver for the region and the state of Hesse can be further promoted. In dialogue with scientists from the university, Franz and Schmitz were able to gain an impression of the diversity of the university's research projects through two interactive presentations.

Gowri Chandran, Dr Kasra Edalat and Professor Thomas Schneider from the Cryptography and Privacy Engineering (ENCRYPTO) Group outlined the evolution and progress of cryptography and presented examples of innovations from basic research that are now an integral – and often unnoticed – part of everyday digital communication. With EMC², the participants of the visit were able to test live a tool that enables end-to-end encrypted communication on several channels. The fact that TU Darmstadt is working on future solutions in a network with a wide range of partners was also demonstrated by an insight into a project carried out as part of the cooperation between the Alliance of Rhine-Main Universities (RMU) and the Hamburg Police Academy. The aim was to assess the legal aspects of the exchange of sensitive data between law enforcement agencies and to identify possible technical solutions.

Showcases

1) “Data Protection Law and Multi-Party Computation: Applications to Information Exchange Between Law Enforcement Agencies” by Amos Treiber , Dirk Müllmann, Thomas Schneider , Indra Spiecker, published at WPES'22.

In this interdisciplinary collaboration with law experts from Indra Spiecker's group at Goethe University Frankfurt, the researchers showed how data can be privately exchanged among law enforcement agencies.

2) ”Encrypted MultiChannel Communication (EMC2): Johnny Should Use Secret Sharing” by Gowri R Chandran , Kilian Demuth, Kasra EdalatNejad , Sebastian Linsner, Christian Reuter, Thomas Schneider , published at WPES'24.

In this interdisciplinary collaboration with usability experts from PEASEC, the researchers demonstrated how to protect users' fundamental right to privacy by allowing them to privately communicate via multiple communication channels.

The showcased research is generously funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) via the RTG Privacy & Trust and the CRC CROSSING, and by the European Research Council (ERC) via the ERC Starting Grant PSOTI.
