Dr. Marten Risius, an Associate Professor at the University of Queensland, Australia, was a guest of RTG Privacy and Trust guest form March 18 – 22, 2024.

Dr. Risius’ research is focused on issues regarding the digital society and online engagement. His articles have been published in several journals, such as MIS Quarterly, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Strategic Information Systems, Journal of Information Technology, MISQ Executive, Business Information Systems Engineering, AIS Transactions on Human Computer Interaction, and Communications of the AIS. Dr. Risius’ research has been recognized with numerous international awards from academia and industry such as the AIS Early Career Award or the Australian Research Council’s Discovery of Early Career Researchers (DECRA). He has been involved in projects raising approximately $13m AUD. His service spans (Mini) Track Chair for ECIS, HICSS, PACIS, and ACIS and as Associate Editor at Internet Research among others.

During his stay, Dr. Risius was available to our doctoral candidates every day on campus to exchange experiences with them and give one-on-one consultations pertaining to their research.

On March 21, 2024, Dr. Risius gave a lecture “Introduction to trends in Trust and Safety Research” (online and in person) which was devoted to trust and safety as a practice within technology companies that is concerned with the reduction, prevention, and mitigation of online harms. Trust and safety research studies how people abuse the internet to cause real human harm, often using [online] products the way they are designed to work. The goal of this lecture was to introduce the audience to the field of Trust & Safety, take a closer look into selective issues (e.g., online extremism, radicalization, and disinformation) and discuss potential countermeasures.
