AR City Maquette

Bachelor Thesis, Master Thesis

Augmented Reality (AR) technology is enabling different applications that enhance the interaction of users with the real world. In city planning, management, and showcasing, maquettes have been widely used to have a broad view of the whole urban environment in a convenient size. However, such view is in general quite limited, when considering all the contextual information that might be necessary to analyze the environment. While projections combined with explanatory descriptions can be considered a useful workaround, they are restricted in terms of the amount of information that can be displayed and the number of stakeholders that can be served at the same time.

Goal

Devise and implement an AR approach to visualize different relevant contextual information on top of a maquette of a city (specifically, Darmstadt), according to the user needs. A user study will be conducted to evaluate the approach.

Requirements

  • Programming experience is required, particularly with Xcode for iOS
  • Experience with Apple's ARKit can be helpful
  • Some hands-on experience in machine learning can be helpful
  • Eagerness to learn and work hard
