PhD Student or Postdoc – Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning, Machine-Generated Text Detection

Your tasks

You will develop machine learning and NLP models and approaches for the detection of machine-generated texts. These methods should reflect the real conditions of human-AI-hybrid generated texts in order to establish a new paradigm in the detection of machine-generated texts and to make the resulting approaches and tools available to the general public in a dedicated software.

The focus lies on human-machine interaction, AI Safety, trustworthiness and the use of various state-of-the-art large language models. The group offers the opportunity to work in an international environment and in collaboration with other leading universities, research institutes and international companies on exciting research topics that are very practical and promote the resilience and security of society in the digital age.

For the position advertised here, we are looking for an employee to work on the topic 'Trustworthy AI-generated Text Detection', as part of an ATHENE Security Cluster project. In this project, we focus on LLM-human hybrid texts and initially collect novel data sets in order to develop detection methods that can differentiate between human and LLM-generated passages at a fine granularity. In the first step, the existing software infrastructure for data collection will be expanded and adapted. Based on this, the theoretical and practical limits of this method will be investigated.

  • Preparation of research reports, publications
  • Participation in seminars and conferences, presentation of scientific work
  • Tasks for the scientific work in the department

Your profile

  • Excellent university degree (M.Sc. / Diploma) in NLP, ML or a related field of computer science
  • Experience in the areas of NLP, ML and LLMs
  • Very good programming skills in Python (especially torch, numpy, pandas, transformers, langchain, etc.) and Java Script / Type Script
  • Experience in software development and especially full-stack web development; knowledge of vue.js and node.js is an advantage
  • Fluent in English, German is a plus
  • High self-motivation and performance-oriented work
  • Willingness to contribute to the university teaching
