Talk: “NLP for Healthcare” (Thomas Polzin & Oliver Ferschke, M*Modal)

Abstract:

Physicians spend only about 33% percent of their time on direct clinical interactions and nearly 49% on EHR and desk work. In this talk, we will discuss how technologies such as artificial intelligence and natural language technologies can help physicians to spend more time with the patient and less time in front of the computer. We will discuss some of M*Modals core artificial intelligence and natural language understanding technologies for extracting knowledge from millions of clinical documents and look at the latest developments in conversational interfaces to enable ambient interactions with the EHR. Deploying and monitoring these technologies is equally important and we will elaborate on some of the underlying technologies as well.

Bios:

Thomas Polzin has served as M*Modal’s Director for Natural Language Processing since August 2011. Dr. Polzin co-founded MultiModal Technologies, Inc. in 2001 and served as its Director of Natural Language Processing from 2001 until August 2011, when the company merged with MedQuist to form M*Modal. Prior to MultiModal, he worked as a Research Scientist at Interactive Systems, Inc. and later as a Senior Research Scientist at Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products. He has held research positions at Carnegie Mellon University, University of Karlsruhe and University of Bielefeld in Germany. He earned his M.A. degree in Linguistics from the University of Bielefeld in Germany. He received his Ph.D. degree in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University.

Oliver Ferschke is a Senior NLP Engineer at M*Modal working on intelligent conversational agents to support clinical documentation. Prior to M*Modal, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Language Technologies Institute at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Dr. Ferschke earned his M.A. degree in English linguistics and a teaching degree in computer science and English from the University of Würzburg, Germany. In 2014, he received his Ph.D. degree (Dr.-Ing.) in computer science from the Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany.
