Save the Date for our 50th Anniversary

We're looking for your favourite CS department memories.

2021/11/11

The Department of Computer Science was found on May 15th, 1972. We want to celebrate our 50th anniversary on May 12th, 2022, and through several smaller highlights across the coming year. Whether you are (or were) a student, staff or alumni – we look forward to hear your stories, see pictures and learn more about your favorite moments from the past 50 years.

In the winter semester of 1971, the first 67 students of the former TH Darmstadt started the new diploma program in computer science, thus laying an important foundation for the establishment of our department. The official founding date goes back to the first departmental conference on May 15, 1972.

Like the science to which it is dedicated, the Department of Computer Science has grown and evolved greatly over the past 50 years. Today, we are a respected institution and currently the academic home of nearly 4,000 bachelor's and master's students, doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, and young investigators, as well as more than 20 reputable professors.

Save the Date: Anniversary ceremony on May 12, 2022

We will be taking the anniversary year 2022 as an opportunity to highlight both the history and the present of our department. Applied computer science and digitization are now ubiquitous for most of us and firmly anchored in our everyday lives. But do users really understand what is behind it? In 2022, we also want to show in articles, interviews and events how computer science and scientific methods work and perhaps even dare to look into the future.

Of course, there will also be a celebration – with an official anniversary ceremony on May 12, 2022 and many smaller highlights throughout the year. The activities will gradually be posted on the website. In addition to the centrally planned actions, ideas from all parts of the department are welcome and we will also be happy to include your events in the anniversary program.

Do you remember?

For many people, the time at the university remains an important and formative phase of their lives. Paths are set, friendships are made, it is also a time of experimenting and experiencing new things. There were those special moments – in the lecture halls, in the office, in the Herrngarten or perhaps during a field trip. Share them with us and write us about your beautiful, funny, remarkable memories.

We welcome pictures and stories from your time at the department as well as greetings and congratulations. With your permission, we would like to publish some of these memories during the anniversary year. Write us via the linked form or by emailing us at
