Prestigious award for Prof. Carsten Binnig

Renowned VLDB Endowment elects the database expert to the Board of Trustees

Prof. Dr. Carsten Binnig, Head of the Department for Data and AI Systems (DAI), has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the US-based VLDB Endowment. He will serve in this honorary position for a six-year term beginning on January 1, 2024.

The VLDB Endowment selects its trustees from internationally recognized scholars in the field of database and information systems. They should have demonstrated a particular commitment to the Foundation's objectives through their previous work. The Trustees' role is to oversee the Foundation's charter and activities.

The non-profit organisation, whose acronym VLDB stands for “Very Large Data Bases”, aims to promote scientific work and international exchange in the field of databases and related areas. The Foundation serves as the steering committee for the VLDB conference series, one of the most important and international conferences in the field. The VLDB conference was founded in 1975 and is now closely associated with SIGMOD and SIGKDD.

Emeriti members of the board of trustees include Gustavo Alonso, Michael J. Franklin, David J. DeWitt, and Gerhard Weikum.

Prof. Dr. Carsten Binnig

Professor Binnig has been a full-time professor in the Department of Computer Science since 2017. He is currently the head of the Department of Data and AI Systems. He earned his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zurich. Prior to joining Brown University in 2014, he spent several years in industry as a software architect at SAP, where he played a key role in the development of the SAP HANA main memory database. Binnig is a Principal Investigator at the Hessian Center for Artificial Intelligence (hessian.AI) and heads the research area Systems AI for Decision Support at the Darmstadt site of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI).
