Dr. Manisha Luthra, a post-doctoral researcher in professor Carsten Binnig's research group Data and AI Systems (Systems Group), has been awarded the KuVS Award for her 2021 doctoral dissertation. The award of the special interest group Communication and Distributed Systems (KuVS) is jointly presented by the Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI) and the Informationstechnische Gesellschaft im VDE e.V. (ITG).

Dr. Manisha Luthra's dissertation, “Network-centric Complex Event Processing,” addresses the three core problems of adaptivity, efficiency, and interoperability in stream processing and complex event processing (CEP) systems. In her thesis, she proposed solutions to these core problems and made an important contribution to improving performance in the placement and execution of continuous queries in highly dynamic and modern networks such as the complex environment of a smart city. Her research solves the identified core problems in the context of applications of the Internet of Things, which connects heterogeneous devices with sensors and processing capabilities to automate tasks without human intervention.

Potential applications include traffic control, post disaster management, credit card fraud detection, and load forecasting for smart power grids. Through the investigated solutions, the event processing system can, for example, monitor the transactions of a credit card for a bank, model fraud patterns as events, and thereby efficiently predict frauds using methods developed in her thesis. This enables the banking institutions to prevent considerable losses by timely detecting frauds and adapting to changing fraud patterns efficiently. Dr. Luthra's research was conducted at the research group Multimedia Communication (KOM) of professor Ralf Steinmetz and was additionally supervised by professor Boris Koldehofe. Her research was funded by the DFG Collaborative Research Center MAKI.

The GI/ITG special interest group Communication and Distributed Systems awards the KUVS Prize to outstanding theses and dissertations. The prize will be officially awarded at the International Conference on Networked Systems (NetSys 2023) next September in Potsdam and comes with a prize money of 500 euros for the best dissertation. Ms. Luthra will give a talk on the award-winning thesis at the event.

The special interest group KuVS also awarded student Tobias Kröll for his bachelor thesis “ARIstoteles: iOS Baseband Interface Protocol Analysis”. The thesis was supervised by professor Matthias Hollick.
