A.3 An Economic Perspective on Privacy and Trust

The research of area A3 deals with the economic perspective on privacy and trust and aims at finding new business models that can handle the trade-off between companies’ needs to collect personal information of their users to fulfill their business and the potential loss of users due to data handling practices. The base for developing and assessing new business models that are respecting privacy rights but are also profitable for companies is a better understanding of the value individuals assign to their personal information. Research in A3 has also been carried out to explore ways in which users could be better involved in creating value from data. For this purpose, is A3 investigating the acceptance of business models for platforms, with which users get the opportunity to sell selected pieces of data in a controlled way to interested companies.
