Closure of study programs
Informationen zu möglichen Studiengangswechseln und Fristen

My program is being closed – what do I need to know?

As a result of the Institutional Evaluation of the Department of Computer Science 2021/22, the department has decided to revise its portfolio of degree programs. This involves the closure of the M.Sc. Internet and Web-based Systems (IWS), M.Sc. Visual Computing (VC) and M.Sc. Distributed Software Systems (DSS) programs. The M.Sc. Autonomous Systems program will be formally closed and replaced with the new M.Sc. Autonomous Systems and Robotics (ASuR) program.

Yes,

  • students of M.Sc. IWS until the end of winter semester 24/25.
  • students of M.Sc. DSS, VC and AS until the end of winter semester 25/26.
  • students of M.Sc. IT Sicherheit until the end of winter semester 246/27.

Yes, until the end of winter semester 24/25 (M.Sc. IWS) or winter semester 25/26 (M.Sc. DSS, VC, AS) or winter semester 26/27 (M.Sc. IT Sicherheit).

Note: If the Master's program has not yet been completed, it is possible to change to the M.Sc. Informatik or the new M.Sc. Computer Science taught in English for summer semester 2025 (M.Sc. IWS) or summer semester 2026 (M.Sc. DSS, VC, AS).

Students of the M.Sc. IT Sicherheit can also transfer to the english taught M.Sc. IT Security (please note the language requirements; English language skills at level C1).

See the separate question below.

Standard period of study + 2 semesters, which means:

  • for M.Sc. IWS when enrolling in summer semester 2022 = last re-registration in winter semester 24/25.
  • for students of the Master's programs DSS, VC, AS: enrollment in summer semester 2023 = last re-registration in winter semester 25/26.
  • for M.Sc. IT Sicherheit when enrolling in summer semester 2024 = last re-registration in winter semester 26/27.

This means that students have the full standard period of study (4 semesters) plus two extra semesters to complete their studies, i.e. a total of 6 semesters starting at enrollment.

It is possible to transfer to other master's degree programs in the department. Credits can be recognized for the respective degree programs if the content is suitable.

To ensure that as many credits as possible can be recognized, it is probably advisable to change to the M.Sc. Informatik or the new, English-language M.Sc. Computer Science.

Students of the M.Sc. IT Sicherheit can transfer to the english taught M.Sc. IT Security (please note the language requirements; English language skills at level C1).

Individual advise can be obtained from the departmental student advisory service .

  • for the M.Sc. IWS in summer semester 2022.
  • for the study programs M.Sc. DSS, M.Sc. VC and M.Sc. AS in summer semester 2023.
  • for the M.Sc. IT Sicherheit in summer semester 2024
  • Students of the M.Sc. IWS can re-register into the M.Sc. IWS for the last time in winter semester 2024/25.
  • Students of the M.Sc. DSS, VC and AS can re-register for the last time in the winter semester 2025/26 into their previous program.
  • Students of the M.Sc. IT Sicherheit can re-register into the M.Sc. IT Sicherheit for the last time in winter semester 2026/27.

All remaining students of the closed study programs will be exmatriculated from them.

Please contact the departmental student advisory service if it is foreseeable that you will not be able to complete your studies in one of the closed degree programs in time.
