AI tools in examinations

Recommendations for students

With this guideline, the Department of Computer Science provides its students with recommendations for the responsible use of AI tools such as ChatGPT.

AI tools in examinations

Note:

AI tools are to be understood as aids within the meaning of §22 (7) APB and must therefore always be indicated as such in the references of a written paper.

General recommendations

The department generally recommends that AI tools should only be used with caution when preparing written work such as seminar papers and theses, for generating code or for other examinations, in compliance with good scientific practice and the rules set out in the APB.

If AI tools are not specified as aids despite being used or are used as aids despite being prohibited, there is a risk of an attempt to deceive in accordance with Section 38 APB.

Guiding principles

  • In case of doubt, I clarify the use of AI tools with my examiner (preferably in writing). The use of aids is ultimately their decision.
  • If the tool does what I am supposed to do, then it is probably not permitted.
  • Content created by an AI tool should always be checked by me for accuracy.
  • Content created by AI tools should be checked by me for plagiarism.
  • Content created by AI tools is as much my responsibility as the rest of my work. In the case of theses, see also “Thesis declaration”.
